Melody Braddy – After becoming familiar with Melody's work with 4H, I think she deserves another consideration for citizen of the year. There might be people with bigger singular achievements in the community, but it's special when someone so young has that type of work ethic and self-motivation..

Karla CrissmanI am honored to nominate Karla Crissman for the 2025 Citizen of the Year award. Karla is a pillar of the Hoisington community, a leader who pairs professional expertise with a tireless heart for service.

During her decade-long tenure at Clara Barton Medical Center (CBMC), Karla has transformed local health initiatives. As Chair of the Wellness Committee and a key force behind the Pathways to a Healthy Kansas Grant, she helped secure nearly one million dollars for community improvements. Furthermore, her facilitation of the triennial Community Health Needs Assessment has been instrumental in addressing critical gaps in mental health, childcare, and transportation.

Karla’s dedication to the local economy and culture is immense. Her contributions include:

  • Hoisington Chamber Board: Serving 6 years (currently as Treasurer), she is vital to the success of Labor Day festivities and the annual gun raffle.

  • E-Community Board: Contributing her expertise to strengthen regional initiatives over the last two years.

  • Clara Barton Foundation: A loyal volunteer whose fundraising efforts directly enhance local healthcare services.

Beyond her civic roles, Karla serves as a Eucharistic Minister and a board member for the Heartland Center for Spirituality. Her work with the ACTS retreat team demonstrates her commitment to the spiritual well-being of the region.

Karla serves with a rare blend of humility and consistency. She is a "bridge-builder" whose influence transcends town lines, proving that true citizenship is defined by action, not just residency. For her unwavering commitment to making Hoisington a healthier, stronger place to live, Karla Crissman is an ideal candidate for Citizen of the Year.

Mike HarmonA lifelong resident of Hoisington, Mike Harmon is a dedicated business owner and community servant whose impact is seen in the infrastructure, housing, and civic organizations of our town.

As Co-Owner and President of A&F Enterprises Inc., Mike brings over 40 years of construction and HVAC expertise to our region. His commitment to local development is further evidenced by his ownership of the local car wash and Cardinal Driving Range, as well as his ongoing efforts to rehabilitate residential properties to increase local housing availability.

Mike holds several vital leadership positions that ensure the smooth operation of our community:

  • Board Leadership: President of the Cardinal Apartment Board of Directors and member of the Hoisington Zoning Commission.

  • Healthcare & Education: Currently serving on the Hospital Board of Directors and the BCCC Plumbing Advisory Board.

  • Knights of Columbus: A Past Grand Knight and President of the Columbus Club, Mike serves as the primary facility coordinator and leads major annual fundraisers, including Lenten fish feeds and Labor Day events.

At St. John Catholic Church, Mike is more than a member of the Property Commission; he is a tireless volunteer who personally handles facility maintenance, emergency repairs, and property upkeep. Whether mowing vacant lots or responding to urgent needs at the Parish Center, his "talent and resources" are always available to those in need.

Beyond his professional and civic roles, Mike is a family man, celebrating 37 years of marriage with his wife, Diane. Together they have four children and several grandchildren. Mike embodies the spirit of Hoisington through his "hands-on" approach to citizenship and his lifelong dedication to the town's growth and well-being.

Keith KennonIt is an honor to nominate Keith Kennon, a man whose deep compassion, unwavering integrity, and tireless commitment make him the personification of a model citizen for Hoisington.

Keith is widely recognized for his infectious positive energy. Known for his "daily speeches" and ability to lift the spirits of those around him, he treats every neighbor with the utmost respect. Having served alongside him years ago at the Sheriff’s Office, I can attest that his character is unshakable; he consistently leads with kindness and a genuine desire to help anyone in need.

Keith is a man of action who advocates for the thoughtful growth of Hoisington. He is uniquely distinguished by his ability to rise above local drama, focusing instead on constructive solutions. He takes the time to explain the "why" behind his vision, ensuring that community improvements are collaborative and forward-thinking.

In his professional life, Keith gives 120% to his business, setting a standard of excellence for those around him. This same dedication is evident in his family life. As a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he and his family reflect the values of service and care that every community hopes to emulate.

Keith Kennon does more than just reside in Hoisington; he enriches it. His blend of solution-oriented leadership and genuine love for his neighbors makes him an exemplary candidate for Citizen of the Year.

Deanna Ochs – Deanna has been a resident of Hoisington for most of her life. She has been active in many local organizations including the HOISINGTON Food Bank, Kans for Kids, United Methodist Church, and always a big supporter of the HOISINGTON Cardinals teams of all kinds and booster club.

Her sense of humor is contagious and lights up any room.

She was a secretary and lunch lady at HMS for many years where she was loved by students and staff alike and always available wherever she was needed.

She has been a  “Mom”, “Nana”, to many children other than her own and is always available to babysit both children and pets and a friend and supporter to countless  cancer patients and the elderly.

She’s done all of the above and more, never expecting any praise or recognition. Her kindness is unmatched and has no limit.

Deanna is the definition of a true Citizen and deserves this special recognition.

Kenton RenzIt is a privilege to nominate Kenton Renz for Citizen of the Year. Kenton’s life is defined by a deep commitment to the Hoisington community, evidenced by his tireless service and compassionate heart.

As a dedicated member of Barton County Fire District #2, Kenton is a constant guardian of our public safety. He sacrifices countless hours, day and night, to respond to emergencies, placing the needs of his neighbors above his own comfort. His bravery and reliability in the face of crisis are truly invaluable to our town.

Parallel to his work as a first responder, Kenton is an active member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 286. Through this service, he ensures that our veterans are honored and their sacrifices are never forgotten. Whether he is protecting lives or paying tribute to those who served, his actions reflect a profound sense of duty and patriotism.

Kenton Renz embodies the spirit of selflessness. For his unwavering dedication to protecting our citizens and honoring our heroes, he is an exemplary candidate for Citizen of the Year.
